Why Get Pregnancy Massage?
Prenatal massage offers a wide range of benefits, which include the following:

* Therapeutic massage is a completely safe, natural, drug-free method of relieving the aches and pains of pregnancy.
* Eases backaches, headaches, shoulder and neck aches that may be caused by muscle tension and shifts in posture to accommodate increasing weight
* Decreases pain in the pelvic/hip area
* Increases circulation
* Improves digestion
* Reduces fatigue
* Improves skin elasticity that can help reduce stretch marks
* Helps reduce swelling in such places as hands and lower legs
* Can alleviate the stress on weight-bearing joints, like the knees, which are impacted by the extra weight of a growing baby
* Promotes relaxation and deep breathing
* Helps stabilize hormone levels by lessening anxiety
* Helps prepare the body for labor and delivery by loosening the pelvis and ridding the         body of excess tension prior to the onset of labor

Massage has many scientifically proven health benefits such as stimulating the blood and lymph systems, thereby increasing immunity and removal of toxins, stabilizing hormonal levels, and adding tone and flexibility to muscles -- all of which enhance the health of both you and your baby. As pregnancy progresses, your body adjusts to a changing alignment caused by the baby's increasing weight. This puts strain on your back and legs and increases stress on weight-bearing joints. Massage increases flexibility, enhancing the ability to carry this extra weight while also relieving aches and pains, leg cramps and muscle spasms. The effects of relaxation and tension release add to improvement in the physical state of muscles and joints, and assist in balancing emotions.

Recent studies from the Touch Research Institute (TRI) in Miami, Fla., indicates that pregnancy massage provides more than just symptom relief for the mother. A group of 26 pregnant women were given either massage or relaxation therapy during a five-week study. In addition to experiencing a reduction in symptoms of anxiety, stress, sleep problems and back pain, the massage group had fewer complications in their delivery. Their newborns also had fewer postnatal complications. Another TRI study reported massage during labor resulted in shorter labor times for the mothers, shorter hospital stays and less postpartum depression.

Reassurance, nurturing, and relaxation for the mother during pregnancy has been shown to have far-reaching impact on her fetus. Studies indicate that babies sense and respond to their mother’s stress levels as registered by her increased heartbeat. (For in-depth study of this fascinating subject, please read The Secret Life of the Unborn Child.)

Some women also choose to incorporate elements of massage during childbirth to cope with delivery. Massage therapy can also be a therapeutic treatment after pregnancy as your body returns to its normal state, and you begin your exciting life with baby. New moms are also learning how to bring the benefits of touch therapy to their children through infant massage classes.

All expectant mothers should check with their doctors prior to getting a massage. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, pre-natal massage may not be recommended. It is important to share information about your condition and your preferences with Jennifer when you arrive for your appointment. She will adjust your prenatal massage to make it as soothing and as useful as possible based on your personal needs and preferences.

While getting one massage would be beneficial, pregnancy massage is most beneficial when performed regularly during your pregnancy. By receiving regular pregnancy massage you better prepare your body for labor and delivery, resulting in shorter labor times, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times; not to mention the drug-free relief of all your aches and pains.

Pregnancy Massage

“Jennifer is an amazing massage therapist and esthetician! I was lucky to find her soon after moving to the area at 8 months pregnant. I was stressed from the move/pregnancy and my skin was a mess from the hormone changes. I saw Jennifer for a pre-natal massage and facial and cannot put into words how much better I felt afterwards. Not only was she prepared to make me as comfortable as possible for my massage (she has the greatest bolster pillows!), she worked on my sore back and hips and I actually felt like I could breathe and move more freely after. In addition to leaving my skin glowing at the end of the facial, she followed up with me a couple days later with some great tips for continuing to improve the quality of my sensitive, hormonally charged (acne-prone) face. I have already been back to see her again and plan to see her through the end of the pregnancy and as soon post-natally as possible. I have regularly seen massage therapists for over 10 years now and speak from this experience as I sing her praises and recommend her highly.” ---Amie, Fairfax
